Company History
A company is the net result of all the people who have worked for it throughout its history. Each person contributes to and enhances the company uniquely. However, one person in particular is responsible for the initial growth and success of our company.
Will Murray became enamored with computers in 1981—the start of the personal computer revolution. Over the next 10 years, he learned to program in BASIC and Pascal, developing a few educational programs for the Atari, Apple, and TRS-80 computers. As computer technology advanced, so did Will's skills, and by 1989 he was earning a living using computers and doing graphic design work. In 1991, Will discovered the Internet (this was before the Webhad pictures to click) and helped develop the first public Internet service in San Luis Obispo County, California. Over the next 10 years, Will worked in several different jobs, but continued to do computer and network consulting on the side. In 1996, he became the network administrator for the Endeavour Academy applied science technical school and the Space Endeavour Camp at Vandenberg AFB. Through a connection at Vandenberg, he moved to Sacramento and helped form an online auction company. The "dot.com bust" hit hard in 1999, and the company folded before the end of the year. Will went to work for another technology company, and in 2001 formed his own computer consultancy, Will Murray Consultants (WMC). Over the following years, the company grew despite tough economic conditions in California.
Acanthus Technology, Inc. was born in Reno, Nevada on June 1, 2004. Will Murray was selected to serve as the Chief Operations Officer and Chief Information Officer for the new company. In January 2006, the corporation reorganized and changed its name to the Acorn IT Group. Two business units were created to provide better service to our clients. The first unit, Acanthus Technology Design, offers consulting to provide realistic and tactical steps that midsized and growing smaller companies and non-profit organizations use to maximize their Information Technology investments. Allogro, the second unit, is focused on network integration and system administration for the SMB market.
Acanthus offers a commitment to top-quality service and provides a level of personal interaction and attention to detail that is difficult to find in a "tech company." The folks at Acanthus like working with smaller and medium sized businesses and non-profit organizations. They enjoy helping "the little guys" become technologically competitive with "the big guys" in the market. Combining good technology with the smaller business' ability to adapt to market conditions more quickly is a real competitive edge, and Acanthus helps its clients do so as cost-effectively as possible.
Acanthus Technology Design serves much of the northwestern portion of Nevada and the northern and central portions of California. We plan to continue growing and strengthening our position in the market, but we will never grow so large that we forget the growing small business owner is the heart of our company's success.
